'The Historic Y'

Paulo Freire Freedom School
is housed at the historic YWCA building
at
300 E. University Blvd.

(1/2 block west of 4th Ave on University)

An Amazing Location

Covering 7,500 square feet of space,
completely renovated
before the start of school in August 2005,
the school has several classrooms spaces,
a science lab, a computer lab, a cafeteria and a library.

In addition, students are able to use
the ZUZI! Dance Company studios and theater
which are located directly above the school
for their art/health education program.

Students also enjoy
service learning opportunities
and access to a wide variety of
educational and environmental organizations
housed within 'The Historic Y' complex
including:
the Arizona Wilderness Coalition,
the Tucson Audubon Society,
Friends of the Saguaro National Park,
the Sky Island Alliance,
the Environmental Educators Exchange,
Desert Archaeology, Tucson CSA,
the Sierra Club Rincon Group,
the Sonoran Joint Venture, and the
Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection.

The University of Arizona is
within walking distance of the school,
as well as, four great museums:
the U of A Museum of Art,
the Center for Creative Photography,
the Arizona State Museum,
and the Arizona Historical Society.

The Renovation

When the contractors fired-up
the new air conditioning system
the week before the opening of school
and cool and fresh air began to circulate
through the recently painted and carpeted
classrooms and offices of Paulo Freire Freedom School,
we knew we were home free.
Phase 2 of this three-month renovation project
had been completed
and the building was ready
for the opening of school
on August 23, 2005.

Check out the slide show
of before and after photos below.

Before Phase II After Phase II

Renovation of the space
took place in three phases:
Phase I involved the construction of
two classroom spaces,
installation of a new fire alarm system,
and other renovations needed for a
Certificate of Occupancy.

Phase II involved
the installation of a completely new HVAC system,
ADA and other restroom renovation,
painting, carpeting, and other finishing.

Phase III will involve
the installation of a 'lift'
to ensure access to all.
