As part of our interdisciplinary health unit, on Wednesday 2/4/15 we explored types of organizations that exist to help create healthy, vibrant communities. Students were put into groups and then walked to the following diverse entities:
Congressman Grijalva’s Tucson office
COPE – Lifestyle Improvement Center
Tucson Audubon Society
Southern Arizona AIDs Foundation
Armory Park Senior Center
City of Tucson – Planning & Development
Afterwards we shared what we learned in mixed groups. This experience will help prepare our students for their upcoming project where they will research a community need, analyze root causes and suggest possible solutions. We will all be tiptoeing into the challenging, but powerfully impactful world of GIS (geographic information systems), in order to use data to help us understand the causes and correlations between multiple demographic information.
