Whereas El Pueblo Integral – Teaching & Learning Collaborative (EPI) is currently* the charter holder for both Paulo Freire Freedom School – University and Paulo Freire Freedom School – Downtown and the EPI Corporate Board (CB) has fiduciary responsibility for the operations of the non-profit organization including the operations of PFFS-University and PFFS-Downtown – each school has its own School Governing Board (SGB).
*In 2016-2017 the CITY Center for Collaborative Learning Corporate Board will become the charter holder for both of these middle schools (as well as City High School) and will have fiduciary responsibility for all of CITY Center, including the operations of PFFS-U, PFFS-D, and CHS.
We use a two-tier, governance structure in the operation of our schools (see ‘Governance’ at PFFS-Downtown and PFFS-University) with the Corporate Board (CB) holding all fiduciary responsibilities and the School Governing Board (SGB) for each school being responsible for individual school practices/policies related to school climate and culture (including but not limited to the expulsion of students) and for carrying out the mission and strategic plan of the CB.
During the 2014-2015 school year, the School Governing Board of PFFS-University served as the SGB for both schools. However, in September of this 2015-2016 school year, a separate SGB for PFFS-Downtown will be convened and will mirror the structure of the PFFS-University governing board – a structure that we have found to be extremely successful. The PFFS-University governing board has consisted of the two co-directors, two school staff members, two community members and three parents. The two Boards Meet Next Week.
We are recruiting now community and parent members who will serve on the 2015-2016 PFFS-Downtown and PFFS-University ‘School Governing Boards’. If you are interested (or know someone who might be interested) please use the form below to communicate your interest:
