This Thursday evening, Dec. 13th, we are opening our doors for the first in a series of Showcase nights to feature some of the impressive work our students have been up to this semester.
You might remember in years past that the Pennington Street Showcase was one large event with a large number of sessions and exhibits. We’ve decided to change that approach and, throughout the year, host a series of smaller Showcase events with fewer sessions and exhibits.
There are two Showcase events scheduled for this year. The first one is happening on December 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This Showcase will have an arts & culture focus. The second Showcase, scheduled for April 4, will have a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, or STEM.
City High School and the two Paulo Freire Freedom Schools (PFFS) are involved with the planning and preparations for all of the Pennington Street Showcase events. We are excited to share with you our line-up for the Pennington Street Showcase on December 13:
Performances (about 15 minutes each):
- Fashion Show in Spanish (PFFS-U)
- Classical Guitar (CHS)
- To Kill a Mockingbird Preview (CHS)
- Civil Rights Era Jazz Cafe (PFFS-D)
- Music Workshop Performance (CHS)
- Art Show and Print Sale (CHS)
- American Studies: Southeastern Arizona Travel Guide (CHS)
- Dia de los Muertos Altar Display (CHS)
- 1950s DNA LPs (PFFS-D)
The expectation is that any of the students who are in the classes that will be presenting work should be there at the Showcase. Any other students and staff who are not directly involved are welcome to be there too to support all of this great work.
This year, we’re planning 2 Showcase events, and in the following years we are hoping to plan for 3 events throughout the year. with the themes of Arts & Culture, STEM, and Social & Environmental Justice.
I hope this provides you with some additional information for the upcoming Pennington Street Showcase and the overall change in the approach to this annual tradition. I hope to see you at the Pennington Street Showcase on Thursday!
