Patrick Kelly

PatrickHello, my name is Patrick Kelly and this year I am excited to be teaching Humanities at the Downtown campus of Paulo Freire Freedom School.

Born and raised in Tucson, I returned 8 years ago after a near 20 year hiatus to the Bay Area. I graduated from the U of A with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and at San Francisco State University I completed my Masters of Fine Arts in the area of Conceptual Design and Information Arts. After more than 10 years in the art industry, I began teaching in San Francisco.  Since coming to Tucson I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, most recently at Utterback Magnet Middle School.

I have been hanging out in downtown Tucson since I was a kid, at 12 I was riding the bus with my friends to skate the empty parking structures and old Pioneer Hotel pool. As I grew older I started going to punk shows and put on plays with a theater group I helped found, Moon of the Loon Enterprizes. I have deep love of learning and I hope my students will always see themselves as life-long learners!

Patrick Kelly is also starting the Principal Apprenticeship pilot program at PFFS-D. Patrick has been teaching English and Language Arts at PFFSD since 2016. Patrick is an expert in project-based learning and has designed and implemented multiple gold-standard interdisciplinary projects. Patrick has been head basketball coach for City High, and he has also been a Critical Friends Group coach, drama teacher, and member of the competency-based learning development team. Patrick has forged powerful relationships in the community which have increased student engagement and success, earning him the 2020 Ray Davies Educator of the Year award at the Jewish History Museum and Holocaust Memorial.
