Santo Nicotera

Santo NicoteraI moved to Tucson from Denver in August 2002 to form the educational non-profit El Pueblo Integral with JoAnn Groh and begin designing Paulo Freire Freedom School – University. We opened that middle school in 2005 at the Historic Y near the University of Arizona.  We opened the second middle school, Paulo Freire Freedom School – Downtown, in 2014 on Pennington St. in downtown Tucson.  Both schools were officially handed over to CITY Center for Collaborative Learning in 2016 and I stepped down as principal of PFFS-University to become the director of professional development at CITY Center.

Before moving to Tucson, I was a classroom teacher, school administrator, staff developer, and small schools designer/coach at a large high school in Denver. I retired from Denver Public schools in June 2002.  See my complete resume.

I have two beautiful children from a previous marriage, Anna and Antonio (who both live in Denver), four beautiful grandchildren, Olivia, Santo, Eliza, and Cate (also in Denver) and I have the great privilege of living with JoAnn Groh who also has two beautiful children, Brianna (who lives in Philadelphia) and Jacob (who lives in Tucson and is attending the UofA).
